My e34 is a rust free Florida/ NC car. I go to college in the mountains now where salt is used. I know undercoating for the underbody but what about the body? Could I just do a good wax? Good wax and clear plastidip for the lower body? The car made it 22 years without rust and I’d like to delay it as long as possible.

No wax, get a sealant.

I could just do under the trim and around the wheel wells. They make it in clear.

Any brand you recommend? I think I’d have to order it.

in which case, why not just get the whole car done? will save you a lot of grief, esp with scratchs

I’ll look into it. It could cost more than just sealing it though.

Collinite 845, think of it like a wax that’s meant to last 8-12 months at a time. It’s cheap and will do the job perfectly. There are more expensive sealants but not necessary for your particular application.

Also a little Collinite 845 goes a LOOONG way, do not overapply it is not necessary. After you apply it you have to keep the car dry for 12-24 Hours to properly get it to bond so check the weather.

Oh yeah! I’ve heard of using that on underbodies and wheel wells but not on paint. Still a good choice.

Also a plus side of a sealant like Collinite is dirt and grime won't bond to the paint either so cleaning your car will be DRASTICALLY easier and faster.

Also good to hear. They’re pretty cheap and plentiful these days.

The most important thing is to wash the car frequently, especially the under carriage. You have to get the salt off it as often as you can. Aside from that, I’ve had good results using an Amsoil product called heavy duty metal protector as an undercoating. It’s a heavy oil that forms a wax like film after it’s applied. Get the car up in the air and apply liberally (just not too much at once or it runs). Wear goggles, a mask, and rubber gloves. Then take it for a long drive with the windows down because it does stink a little when it burns off the exhaust.

I really want... but can’t. Later though.... later later... but not right now right now.

Why even drive it in the salt? That thing is way to nice to sacrifice to sodium chloride or relatives.
There is no protection from salt. Don’t believe anyone who says otherwise.
(Grew up in Michigan. Knows salt).

I could probably let my brother drive it back home and take back my 200,000 mile Saab... but he always pops the clutch out on starts.
I’d personally rather have salt than have it park in a highschool parking lot. Too many assholes that will key your car for looking at their girlfriend funny or people throwing footballs in the parking lot.

Loan it to me for the winter. It will get love and gentle starts.
A romp in the mountains every so often.
Mild weather and a dry climate.
Oh, fuck it. Just sell it to me.

I have way too much into it and haven’t quite driven it 1000 miles yet since I got it in July.
That should scare you away. But most of that is because I’ve been in school since mid august and July had about 2 weeks in the shop/ me redoing the front suspension.
